Where to visit in Yorkshire in 2019

The start of a new year is the perfect time to start planning your next adventure. Where will you visit, an old favourite or somewhere new? If you’re considering a break in Yorkshire there’s so much to see and do, wherever you decide to stay. Here are some of the events we’re looking forward to the most!

Yorkshire Coast

Tomorrow’s Ghosts Festival, Whitby - 26th to 28th April

Whitby’s famous for its Goth Week, where each year you’ll find this small seaside town filled with goths, steampunks and zombies. The Tomorrow’s Ghosts Festival is a celebration of goth culture, film, art and spoken word.

Tour de Yorkshire, 2nd to 5th May

Don’t miss out on this spectacular celebration of Yorkshire! Now an annual event, the Tour de Yorkshire has put the county on the map as a cycling destination, and each year the routes are designed to showcase the very best of Yorkshire’s countryside and coast.

Filey Folk Festival, filey - 3rd to 6th May

The Filey Folk Festival is one of the most popular events in the town’s calendar, with 150 artists performing live with a mix of genres ranging from acoustic folk to blues, country and rock and pop- there’s something for everyone!

Whitby Fish and Ship Festival, Whitby - 18th to 19th May

Learn about the town’s seafaring heritage at this fantastic new festival on Whitby’s harbour. Discover what the sailors ate and how they stored and preserved their food on Captain Cook’s voyages.

Whitby Regatta, Whitby - 10th to 12th August

A packed weekend of yacht racing, rowing, and entertainment. It’s a the largest regatta on the Yorkshire Coast and is always jam-packed, book your cottage early to avoid disappointment!

Whitby Folk Week, Whitby - 17th to 23rd August

This fabulous popular festival returns to Whitby in August, combining the best of the summer weather with over 100 artists ready to perform. Dance until you drop!

Whitby Pirate Festival, Whitby - 6th to 8th September

The Pirate Festival returns to Whitby, raising valuable funds for the life-saving work of the RNLI. Enjoy swashbuckling fun for all the family, from live music, games and treasure hunts.

Staithes Art and Heritage Festival, Staithes - 7th to 8th September

One of the best festivals on the Yorkshire Coast, the annual Arts and heritage Festival gives many contemporary artists the opportunity to showcase their work in this quirky and charming seaside village There’s over 90 cottages in the village and many public spaces exhibiting work, with more artwork to be found dotted around the village and beach.

North York Moors

60s Fest, North Yorkshire Moors Railway - 13th to 14th July

This popular festival returns this summer. Head back in time on the steam railway to discover 60s themed activities at each station.

Castle Howard Proms, Castle Howard - 3rd August

Classical concert will be a night to remember, set in the spectacular grounds of Castle Howard with a fabulous fireworks finale that’s not to be missed!

Annual Steam Gala, North Yorkshire Moors Railway - 27th to 29th September

Explore the stunning beauty of the moors from the a historic steam train. The annual Steam Gala is a delight for railway enthusiasts and a celebration of this historic line.

Railway in Wartime, Pickering - 11th to 13th September

One of the busiest events in the North York Moor’s calendar, Railway in Wartime transports you back in time to the 1940s with a full programme of railway events, live music, singing and dancing, reenactments and shopping.

Yorkshire Dales

Dark Skies Festival, Yorkshire Dales National Park - 15th February to 3rd March

During the amazing Dark Skies festival there’s a range of events across the dales’ towns, villages and beauty spots. From guided walks to craft-making, there’s something for all ages and stunning, unspoilt skies to enjoy at night.

Secret Squirrel, Dales Countryside Museum - 14th April

This fabulous guided walk will take you through the gorgeous Wensleydale countryside in search of red squirrels and other local wildlife, ending at the Snaizeholme Red Squirrel view point.

Sedburgh Food Festival, Sedburgh - 27th to 28th April

A weekend celebrating the fabulous food and drink of the area, with plenty of foodie events throughout the town.

Swaledale Festival, Swaledale, Arkengarthdale & Wensleydale

This fantastic annual event is spread across the Dales, with over 60 fantastic events celebrating music, arts and walking in the Yorkshire Dales.

The Dales Festival of Food & Drink, Leyburn - 15th to 16th June

This popular festival returns in 2019! Held in Leyburn Market Place, enjoy the very best local produce and artisan food, with live entertainment and local performers.

Grassington Festival, Grassington - 15t to 29th June

One of the biggest events in the southern Dales, Grassington Festival is hugely popular and draws some of the biggest acts from across the country.

Leyburn 1940’s Weekend, Leyburn - 19th to 21st July

Return to everything 1940s at this fantastic weekend for all ages. There’s dinner dances, historic vehicles and lots of stalls to enjoy.
