Nestled in the picture-postcard North Yorkshire village of Grosmont above the verdant Esk Valley, this traditional stone cottage is a wonderful place to stay for a couple or family. When you’re not making the most of the abundant walking and cycling trails which surround this two-bedroom home, you can be reading a book by the wood burner in a rocking chair or sitting outside in the sunshine in the glorious garden.
Climb the steps to the front door and head straight for the cosy lounge. Light the wood burner, sink into the comfy sofa, and choose a film to watch on the TV. Adjacent to this homely space is the farmhouse kitchen which has everything you could need to self-cater during your stay and features a solid wood dining table. When night falls, ascend the stairs to the first floor where you’ll find the family bathroom and two restful bedrooms, a double and a twin – each with characterful sloping ceilings and beautiful views over the garden. Children are sure to love playing in the garden and there’s a lovely, shaded area where you can dine alfresco.
One of the biggest draws of the village of Grosmont is the historic train station and its fleet of steam trains (0.5 miles). Experience one of the heritage trains for yourself with a nostalgic journey along the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. During the summer months, you can also catch one of the steam trains on the Esk Valley line that runs from Grosmont to the coastal town of Whitby (7 miles). There, you can climb the 199 iconic steps to Whitby Abbey, the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula, or take a wander along the town’s golden, sandy beach.
