Access Statement for Chapel Gate Cottage

Whitby Railway and Bus Station is approximately 800m away, details of public transport to and from Whitby, details of taxis etc., is available at http://www.infotransport.co.uk

Public toilets can be found ~150m in the market square and ~700 m from the cottage nearby the Railway Station.

A post office is located in the ToyMaster Newsagent (4-5 Bridge Street) ~250 m from the cottage. Exit the gate, and go left on Church street, at the end of the cobblestones turn right and the ToyMaster is a few meters down on the right. There is a post box outside of the ToyMaster. Another larger post office can be found ~800m away at the Co-op supermarket outside the Railway Station.

There is no landline telephone in the Cottage although mobile networks should be available. The nearest public telephone is on Church Street about 150m away (at bottom of steps turn left towards the swing bridge, at end of cobbles turn left).

Introduction

Chapel Gate Cottage is a completely refurbished (2014) modern self-catering cottage. It is a three storey semi-detached house, providing accommodation for up to 4 people available for holiday letting with sole use. It is situated off the cobbled stone Church Street on the East Cliff of the river Esk in Whitby, between the Market Place and the bottom of the 199 steps leading up to the Abbey. The entrance to the house is at ground level. There are views over the town from the front bedroom on the second floor. The property is not well suited to anyone with restricted mobility or having difficulties with stairs. An internal bespoke metal/wooden spiral staircase provides access to the first and second floors and may be a hazard and should be given due consideration by the elderly, parents or carers.

Keys, Arrival & Car Parking Facilities

A key to the front door is located in the combination lock box outside the front door. The code to the lock box is provided by Ingrid Flute’s Yorkshire Holiday Cottages. The lock box is at a height of 140 cm from the floor and requires good finger dexterity to gain access, to manipulate the combination lock and to open it. The key should be returned to the lock box when leaving and the combination scrambled.

To access Chapel Gate Cottage from the train station, cross the River Esk over the swing bridge, follow the road 100m and at the sharp right bend turn left on the cobblestone Church Street. Follow Church Street approximately 100m to the post office. Access to Chapel Gate Cottage is via a wrought iron gate.

To access Chapel Gate Cottage from the A171 heading east, cross the River Esk bridge, turn 1st left into Helredale Road, follow this along and at the sharp left bend turn right into the cobblestone Church street. Follow Church Street approximately100m. Access to Chapel Gate Cottage is via a wrought iron gate.

Chapel Gate Cottage is the house on the left of the property, it is marked with a green sign and the front door is numbered 104.

Designated parking for Chapel Gate Cottage is available in the undercroft space ONLY. Alternatively there is a Pay and Display parking in the Church Street long stay pay and display lot (500m from the property, 92 spaces). There are also pay and display parking areas at the Abbey Headland (415 spaces) and the Marina (320 spaces). 2-7 day passes can be purchased for the parking areas from the tourist information center (located on Langborne Road near the train station and Co-op supermarket), but this does not guarantee parking availability.

The Main Entrance

The main entrance is in the undercroft space approximately 10 m from the front gate. There are two steps up to the front door of the property (raise 21 and 22 cm, tread 30 cm). The front door opens into the property and the entrance is 76 cm wide.

The light for the undercroft space is controlled by a motion sensor.

Rooms in the Property

The property is on three floors.

Lower floor- Entrance way leading to bedroom, utility room with wet room, rear yard, utility shed.

On the ground floor, the front door opens inwards into the hallway (1.65 m by 3.4 m), which has a wooden floor with mats. A solid wooden FD30 door (76 cm width) opens inwards in to the downstairs bedroom, which is 2.35 m by 4.79 m. The bedroom door opens on to a landing (0.9 m by 1 m) and there are two steps down (each 15 cm high) to the bedroom floor. The bed has no restricted access, but there is a minimum gap of 36 cm around the bottom of the bed for access to the other side of the bed and to the window. The bedroom has a single bed, bedside table, chest of draws, wardrobe and standing mirror.

A glass door (70 cm wide) opens from the entry hallway in to the utility room. The utility room is 2.4 m by 2.25 m.  There is a small wet room (shower, WC, hand basin) off the utility room, it is approximately 2.16 m by 1 m. The door to the wet room opens into the utility room and is 68 cm wide. A minimum gap between the hand basin and shower is 50 cm. The shower controls are at a height of 145 - 165 cm above the floor.

The back door (76 cm wide) of the utility room opens inwards and leads to an enclosed yard. There is a step (15 cm) over the door frame down into the yard. To the left is a utility shed, which houses the washing machine, dryer and central heating boiler. There are two steps up to the utility shed (18 and 20 cm high). The top step is angled so has a tread of 14-22 cm depending on foot placement, the bottom step has a tread of 30 cm.

5 steps (approximately 60 cm wide) lead up to the paved yard area. The steps have a raise of 17, 22, 22, 22, and 25 cm from bottom to top step. The bottom step has a tread of 26 cm and the rest are 30 cm. There are metal hand rails on each side of the steps.

The ground floor bedroom and utility room have centrally wired smoke detectors and the utility room has a battery operated carbon monoxide detector.

First floor  Kitchen and lounge/dining room

The first floor is accessed from the ground floor by a spiral stair case (metal supports with wood treads) which has 13 steps from the ground floor to the first floor. The treads are triangular in shape with a minimum width of 9 cm at the middle and maximum 38 cm at the periphery. There is a hand rail on the wall and a central hand rail up the central shaft of the stairway. The rise on each step is 19 cm. The stairs lead to a carpeted first floor landing (approximately 1 m by 1.8 m) and doors off this landing lead to the kitchen and lounge/dining room.

The kitchen is 2.56 by 3.36 m. The part glass FD30 fire door to the kitchen (76 cm wide) opens inwards and is on a spring closing hinge. There are low and high cabinets for storage. The oven is set low. The kitchen has laminate flooring.

The lounge/dining room is 3.4 by 5.4 m. The part glass FD30 fire door to the living room (76 cm wide) opens into the living room and is on a spring closing hinge. The minimum space for access between items of furniture is 40 cm. The lounge/dining room is carpeted.

The lounge and kitchen have  centrally wired smoke detectors and the kitchen has a battery operated carbon monoxide detector.

Second floor – Double and Single Bedrooms and Bathroom

The second floor is accessed from the first floor by a spiral stair case (metal supports with wood treads) which has 13 steps from the first floor to the second floor. The treads are triangular in shape with a minimum width of 9 cm at the middle and maximum 38 cm at the periphery. There is a hand rail on the wall and a central hand rail up the central shaft of the stairway. The rise on each step is 19 cm. The stairs lead to a carpeted second floor landing (approx. 2.17 x 1.29 m) and doors off this lead to the double and single bedrooms and bathroom.

A FD30 solid fire door (74 cm wide) with a spring closing hinge opens from the second floor landing in to the single bedroom. This is approximately 3.42 by 2.57 m and has a single bed, bedside table and chest of draws. The bed can be accessed without restriction, but has a minimum gap of 32 cm around the base to access the other side of the bed and the window. The bedroom is carpeted. There are low hanging eves on either side of the window that overhang the head of the bed and the base of the bed and the dresser. The inside wall of this room is the inside wall of the stairwell, so it is a curved wall, curved inwards into the room.

A FD30 solid fire door (74 cm wide) with a spring closing hinge opens from the second floor landing in to the double bedroom. There is a hallway 1.98 by 0.83 m leading from the doorway to the main part of the bedroom. The main part of the bedroom  is approximately 3.13 by 3.45 m. The bedroom has a double bed, bedside tables, chest of draws and wardrobe. A minimum gap of 65 cm is available around the base of the bed for access. The bedroom is carpeted. There are low hanging eves on either side of the window that overhang one side of the head of the bed and the dresser.

A FD30 solid fire door (74 cm wide) opens from the second floor landing into the bathroom. The bathroom is approximately 1.72 by 2.43 m. There is a WC, bath, separate shower and hand basin. There is a step up in to the shower of approximately 10 cm, and a bi-fold door which opens inwards provides an opening of approximately 52 cm.  The shower controls are 110 cm from the floor. A minimum gap of 57 cm is between the shower and hand basin. The bathroom has vinyl flooring.

The bedrooms have centrally wired smoke detectors.

The stairwell and landings have emergency lighting.

The handcrafted spiral staircase creates a real feature in the property and the box window in the lounge offers fantastic views over Church Street so that you can sit and watch the world go by. This property is suitable for families or couples wanting a relaxing break by the seaside in a convenient location.

Hi, we were very, very happy with our cottage in Whitby. The quality was of a more than 'excellent' standard. We loved the place, in Church Street with parking next to the Whitby Jet Museum. The noise level was perfect despite being in a main road and we loved 'people watching' from the cottage. We loved just being minutes from the Abbey, which is one reason we chose the cottage. Area Information

Whitby
Whitby is a popular choice for visitors all year round. It is well known for its long sandy beach and delicious seafood. The river Esk flows through the town to the sea and cottages are perched on the hills on each side, with cobbled streets and historic yards providing a maze of places to explore. The town has a fantastic mix of modern shops and services, traditional stores and boutique shops. Whitby jet continues to be made into beautiful jewellery and sold in a number of shops.  There are plenty of excellent restaurants which serve local fish and seafood, as well as a wonderful choice of cafes and tearooms.

The ruins of Whitby Abbey stand dominantly on the clifftop and can be reached by climbing the 199 steps from the old town. The Abbey is said to have been the inspiration for Bram Stoker's novel Count Dracula, and its gothic splendour is the perfect place from which to take in some truly stunning views over the town, harbour and coastline. Whitby harbour is steeped in history and visitors can see where British explorer Captain James Cook first worked as an apprentice before setting sail and discovering Australia. A statue of this great explorer stands proudly above the town, along with some huge whalebones, a sign of the town's maritime history. The harbour is a buzz of activity and you can enjoy early mornings watching the fishing boats come ashore before getting first choice of their catch of the day.

There's always something happening throughout the town, with festivals and fairs are held throughout the year. These include Whitby Folk Week and the Whitby Regatta, and there are two popular Goth festivals each year.
