Take a break to the Yorkshire Dales National Park and stay in this farmhouse which retains much of its original charm, from wooden beamed ceilings to exposed stonework. Cosy and spacious, it’s an excellent place for large families or groups of friends to gather together. From Hawes, you can join a stretch of the iconic Pennine Way for adventurous activity through beautiful scenery.

Step inside and you’ll find an entrance hall with space to take off your shoes and hang your coat, with a small step into the snug. Featuring a cushy sofa and a TV, this is a great place for a little peace and quiet to read a book or watch a film, and just a few steps away is the charming bar. The living room/dining area is a versatile space which has plenty of seating and entertainment, with a games table, TV and music system, as well as a large dining table for family gatherings. Traditionally styled with wood features, exposed stonework and a multi-fuel stove, the room is a warm and welcoming space and the main social hub of the house. A second dining table can be found in the generously-sized kitchen, alongside an electric effect wood burner. Benefitting from built-in appliances and a light, bright style, fixing feasts for your guests will be an enjoyable task. The ground floor also boasts a study, a cloakroom with WC and a utility room for convenience. Upstairs are four en-suite bedrooms, two of which are doubles which feature characterful wrought iron surrounds and plenty of storage. In the master bedroom, you’ll find a king-size bed situated beneath a beautiful, coffered wood ceiling, as well as a selection of seating, storage and a TV where you can relax in style. Finally, a single bedroom completes the sleeping arrangements with an antique brass frame. Outside, the garden has a pretty patio surrounded by borders and raised beds, alongside furniture where you can sit and soak in the views with a cup of tea in hand.

Hawes itself is a great base for a holiday, with plenty to see and do right on your doorstep, including the town’s weekly market where you can sample fine produce and pick up trinkets to mark your travels. Cheese lovers should relish the opportunity to visit the Wensleydale Creamery, just half a mile away, where you can book yourself onto a full experience to see how Wensleydale is made before heading to the tasting room for a treat. For a more active day out, pack a picnic and take the circular walking route to Aysgarth Falls (10 miles) to see the cascading water crash down the limestone stops.

We really enjoyed our stay at Steppe Haugh. The property is quirky and full of character- Ive never seen so many steps and odd stairs! Every bedroom has a lovely en-suite and the beds were comfortable as was the lounge. We were able to go for great walks straight from the house and still be right in the lovely little town of Hawes with its shops, pRead moreubs and cafes. I was especially taken with The Dales Countryside Museum and we spent a very interesting afternoon there. Hide

Although the weather was appalling during our week at Steppe Haugh, we had a wonderful time, which was helped by the beautiful cottage. It is incredibly comfy and relaxing. It was great to have an en suite in each room, as we had four teenagers and three grown up with us. This beautiful, quirky home was a pleasure to spend time in. It genuinely felt like home only with more kitchen utensils! We had everything we could possibly ask for. We thoroughly enjoyed our short break and would highly recommend. We definitely hope to return.

Extremely well equipped cottage, perfect for a large family as all bedrooms are en-suite. Traditional decor and furniture enhances the cottage feel. Well maintained tiered garden is perfect for a lazy sunny day. It is a short 5 minute walk to the bustling town centre with a variety of cafes, shops and pubs.

Steppe Haugh was an excellent place for our group to stay with four ensuite bedrooms. It is very conveniently located in Hawes close to all the shops, cafes and pubs, and there are some excellent short walks from Hawes. We have never stayed in a place that is so well equipped with good quality things.
